The VPP Steering Committee has committed to give employees tools to help improve overall fitness and health in partnership with AdvanceMed Hanford (AMH).

2009 VPP Survivor Wellness Challenge
The highly anticipated 2009 VPP Survival Wellness Challenge kicked off in conjunction with the VPP and Battelle Staff Association Wellness Vendor Fair on May 6th and ended on July 29th. AdvanceMed Hanford has worked with VPP to develop a four-segment challenge to promote a healthy lifestyle. There were prize drawings for qualifying participants after each segment as well as a drawing at the end of the entire Challenge, including the Grand Prize of a $1000.00 gift certificate to REI.
There were two new ways to win in this year's Survivor Wellness Challenge: the Workout Buddy program and the TeamWorks program. Thank you to everyone who joined these new activities, and congratulations to the lucky winners of these challenges.

AMH Nutrition Challenge — April 6-30, 2009
AMH conducted this Nutrition Challenge to encourage Hanford employees to become aware of their health choices. Participants earned points for eating certain healthy foods and avoiding saturated fats. Participants who earned a minimum of ninety points were entered into prize drawings for a CalorieSmart Nutrition Calculator. Flyer
VPP Survivor Wellness Challenge
PNNL's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), AdvanceMed Hanford (AMH), and the Battelle Staff Association (BSA) kick-off a 12 week wellness program that ran from May to August. The 12 week program was a gradual, progressive program designed to encourage and promote a healthy lifestyle. The program consisted of four 3-week segments where staff had the opportunity to earn points through a variety of wellness activities. The program encouraged aerobic activity, water intake, fruit/vegetable servings, and stretching. Over 400 staff participated in the annual challenge.
There were four random prize drawings at the end of each segment for staff that met the minimum points. Partipants that completed the minimum points for each of the four segments were placed into a grand prize drawing.

AMH Weight Management Course
In conjunction with the PNNL VPP Wellness Challenge, AMH taught a 5-week Weight Management class. The course covered topics including goal setting, caloric needs, meal distribution, understanding food labels, calorie tracking, carbohydrates & fiber, protein & fats and exercise.
Participants also received a notebook of information on calorie counting, food journaling and educational topics to provide weekly weigh-in and body composition tests, and offered the opportunity for one-on-one individualized feedback.
VPP and AMH Healthy Meals Presentation
The Voluntary Protection Program and AdvanceMed Hanford held a Healthy Meals presentation in the Battelle Auditorium on Thursday, June 28th from 11:30-12:30. Attendees learned about planning and preparing healthy meals and overcoming barriers to healthy eating by Kimberly Conley, MS., MPH, AdvanceMed Hanford. Samples of delicious recipes were provided along with a print-out of the recipes, a Living Healthy newsletter, and information from the American Heart Association. Sheila Stade and Tomiann Parker were winners in the random prize drawings. They each received a Quick and Healthy Cookbook written by a credentialed dietitian with outstanding reviews.
Nutrition: A Foundation for Wellness Presentation
Amy Lindholm, a registered dietitian from the Benton Franklin Health District presented “Nutrition: A Foundation for Wellness” on May 20, 2007 in the Battelle Auditorium. The presentation focused on some of the causes that have led to six out of ten adults in Washington state being overweight and/or obese and how to help overcome/prevent these causes for a healthy and happy lifestyle.

Health & Wellness Fair
Attend the Health & Wellness Fair on May 10, 2007 between 11 am - 1 pm in EMSL 1075/1077. Bring your family! There will be plenty of great health and wellness information, resources, & prize drawings from local health and wellness companies and organizations. Learn about some great activities that are available for people of all ages. For example, Benton Franklin Community Health Alliance will be providing information on healthy food choices and promoting a "Fun with Food" day camp for children. See the BSA calendar for more information about the fair.
Start earning points for Survivor — The Ultimate Challenge. Earn a point by attending the Health and Wellness fair. Stop by the AMH booth during the fair to get your blood pressure taken and earn another point.
Get a Printout of Your Body Measurements using Intellifit
Interested in tracking your body measurements? The Environment, Safety, Health, and Quality Directorate has been working with researchers from the Computational & Information Sciences Directorate to develop a new software tool using the Intellifit System to calculate body measurements and provide users with a print-out of their measurements for the 12 week Survivor Challenge. Stop by the Intellifit booth at the Health and Wellness Fair and receive a "pass" then head over to the ETB/Lobby where the Intellifit System is located to get scanned. Don't worry, if you can't make it, there will be additional sessions throughout the 12 week challenge to take advantage of.

A 54 minute streaming video presentation by Dr. Larry Jecha, Director of the Benton Franklin Health District, sponsored by PNNL's Safety and Health Department in conjunction with PNNL's Voluntary Protection Program's Wellness Initiative and AdvanceMed Hanford.

Fitness Classes:
We also encourage you to try a fitness class sponsored by the Battelle Staff Association in the ROB Fitness Room. The BSA Fitness Room is located in the ROB Basement, Room 274. You can schedule an appointment for your own personal workout through the BSA Fitness Room or there are a number of Fitness classes available for you to take (see the BSA site for the most current class schedule).
