Move Safe
With the Research Campus of the Future underway, moves have become familiar to many staff. While Facilities & Operations' Relocation Service Center move crew receive appropriate training regarding proper lifting techniques, hazard recognition, and prevention of accidents, staff often do not receive specific training or safety reminders. In the midst of the hustle of your regular workload, packing up boxes and preparing to move, safety may not always be the most important topic on your mind.
In response to current and upcoming office moves, PNNL's Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) is rolling out its "Move Safe" campaign.
When you receive your move notice, you will also receive an email from VPP with several safety topics, including tips on
- Proper lifting techniques
- Protecting hands and feet from minor injuries
- Keeping exits clear and safe
- Reporting near-misses and injuries to 375-2400
- Available ergonomic evaluation tools.
The email also provides a link to valuable F&O information regarding moves, safety equipment in your new location, staging areas and resources available to help you during your move.
Labels
Another added feature are move labels. These templates are a great addition to our Move Safe campaign. Just click on one one of the designs below, enable macros, then follow the prompt to type in your name, new location, and move# on the first label. The macro will automatically duplicate the information onto the rest of the labels for you! The labels fit Avery 5164 Addressing and Shipping Labels or can be printed on regular paper and cut if you don't have label material. Pick a favorite or use both!
Posters
As you begin to pack up your office, you also may notice several "Move Safe" posters in hallways where groups of staff are moving to and from. We hope this added visual reminder will keep safety in mind and prevent injuries associated with moving.
Background
The campaign was launched in October 2005 to a pilot group of Pacific Northwest Site Office staff moving from NSB to ETB. Since that time, more than 85 staff have received the Move Safe email reminder, and posters are in place in major move locations throughout the Lab.
"Our clients were thrilled with the entire process, saying 'The move went very smoothly. Telephones, computers, prox cards, keys, moving boxes, furniture, facility modifications-everything was on someone's list and was taken care of.'" said Mike Schlender, director of Facilities and Operations. "The Move Safe campaign is just one element in our goal of helping staff to remain vigilant to their commitment to safety on a daily basis."
We care about you and your safety. We want you to arrive in your new location safely and create a safe environment for yourself and your coworkers. If you have any questions regarding Move Safe, please contact the Voluntary Protection Program Steering Committee. Move safe — you make it happen.
