VPP Onsite Review

A team of evaluators from the Department of Energy and other Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) certified sites were here June 8-12 to conduct an onsite review of our VPP. While here, the team followed up on actions taken since the last review in 2007 and conducted interviews with staff.

The assessment team was impressed with PNNL's progress since the 2007 assessment. They noted and increase in managements leadership and forums for solving problems, as well as evidence of Safety, Operations and Reasearch collaboration.

VPP is a critical external verification of excellence in worker, safety and health. It is based on continuous improvement in safety and health performance. Currently, we are the only DOE Office of Science Laboratory to have achieved VPP STAR status.

Thank you and congratulations to all of PNNL staff for all of your hard work and commitment to making VPP a success at the Lab.

Should you have any questions about the onsite review, please contact your VPP steering committee at voluntary.protection@pnl.gov.

Human Performance Inprovement brown bag presentation — April 23, noon-12:45 pm, EMSL Auditorium

HPI raises awareness of how everyday situations can lead to injuries. The use of this knowledge can empower everyone to think ahead and prevent accidents instead of asking ourselves later, "What was I thinking?"

During this second of four presentations, nationally recognized speaker Joe Estey applied HPI principles to events specific to our area and discussed how accidents could have been prevented using HPI tools. Learn more and view the previous HPI presentation here.

VPP Survey Recognition Awards

For those that participated in the annual VPP survey a few months ago and indicated that you would like to receive a recognition award, your award has been sent to you. Your commitment to outstanding safey performance and active participation has allowed PNNL to be recognized as a leader among DOE Office of Science national laboratories. If you took the survey and requested a recognition award but did not receive one, contact .

To err is human…to understand why is HPI

Whether you’re on or off the job, the actions you take can turn your life around in the blink of an eye. By understanding human performance, you’ll be taking a proactive step towards an injury-free career.

Nationally recognized speaker, Joe Estey presented “The ABCs of Human Performance Improvement (HPI)” on Friday, January 30, in the EMSL Auditorium from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

If you missed this enlightening conversation, here’s your chance to get smart on HPI. Estey has helped hundreds of companies predict when and where an error will occur, prevent the error and eliminate the event. With a full house in attendance, Estey explained the fundamentals of human performance and how everyone can utilize the HPI tools for recognizing error-likely situations. Human errors occur every day, however, errors are predictable and preventable. Thinking ahead about an activity results in working safely, versus thinking back after an injury and asking yourself “What was I thinking?”

Annual VPP Survey

The VPP Steering Committee encouraged PNNL staff to take a few minutes to complete our annual VPP Survey. Survey input is an integral part of the annual program evaluation. Employee commitment to outstanding safety performance and active participation has allowed us to be recognized as a leader among DOE’s Office of Science national laboratories.

On November 24th PNNL Communications sent the e-mail invitation to partake in this survey. This was followed by the message from Gallup including your unique survey Access Code, which ensured your responses are associated with the correct workgroup, to make sure you do not complete the survey twice, and to track participation rates during the survey field period.
